BarCamp Oxford

Dr J-P Stacey

We're excited to announce that Oxford will host its own BarCamp on April 4-5 this year.

barcamp

BarCamps are loosely organized "unconferences", where every attendee is a participant and the sequence of events is decided by consensus: as the BarCamp site declares, "no spectators, only participants." BarCamps have happened across the world, from Austin to Taiwan, and are a great way for web, tech and media communities to share ideas, inspire new breakthroughs, and discuss the most challenging issues in the industries.

BarCamp Oxford kicks off on Saturday April 4, starting late and sociable with a meal somewhere in Oxford (yet to be decided). We're collecting a list of crash space on the wiki page, so that people coming from out of town will have somewhere to stay over. Then on Sunday we've booked the Oxford University Club for the whole day, It's a really nice place for talks, workshops and just general unhurried chat. In the evening there'll probably be a pub trip to round things off.

But, like all unconferences, BarCamp Oxford needs you: let us know on the wiki that you're attending; suggest some talks or workshops you'd like to see or could help with; or tell us if you can offer projectors, wifi points or other essential tech. Most of all: spread the word. Tell the local communities that a BarCamp is happening in Oxford: blog about it, or email friends and colleagues. It'll be a great success, if we want it to be.

Barcamp Oxford 2009 is supported by OSS Watch, Torchbox and Apache Software Foundation, who've all volunteered sponsorship and/or man-hours to get it off the ground. Would your organization like to sponsor some aspect of BarCamp Oxford? If so, then do get in touch: the organizers would love to hear from you.)
