We work with
Age of Stupid
Picking up where Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" left off, "The Age of Stupid" is a compelling mix of documentary archive footage and chilling vision of a future, set in 2055.
The movie was released in 2008 following a successful crowd-funding campaign which gave the filmmakers complete control over the making of the film and who can see it.
We designed and built their Drupal-powered website and also developed the Indie Screenings system for Spanner Films, a Django application enabling individuals and organisations around the world to buy a licence to put on their own screening of the movie.
Asthma UK
Originally launched in 2006, we’ve worked closely with Asthma UK ever since to keep their site fresh through a process of iterative, incremental improvement.
Instantly recognisable through Asthma UK’s distinctive branding, the site delivers value for everyone affected by asthma; from first time users and newly diagnosed, to the “heavy users” among the site’s vibrant and supportive online community.
The site also features seamless web services API integration with Asthma UK’s Raiser's Edge Enterprise membership database.
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home
We've been working with the team from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home since 2002, when they became one of the very first clients for our RationalMedia CMS.
In August 2008, following extensive internal and external stakeholder consultation, we launched the latest iteration of the Battersea website, upgrading to RationalMedia 3 in the progress.
Fundraising campaigns, Kitty Kabin and Kennel Sponsor, are now promoted with independent microsites, also powered by RationalMedia.
Blackstone Chambers
Blackstone Chambers' areas of expertise include commercial law, human rights and public law, public international law, employment and European law. Among the members of Chambers - including 32 Queen's Counsel and 42 junior barristers - are many top-rated silks in these practice areas.
As well as reinforcing Blackstone Chambers' professionalism, values and integrity the site, launched in June 2008, makes it easy for instructing solicitors to find barrister CVs quickly and easily, including quick links to specific areas of practice, and sets out clearly the recruitment process for potential applicants for pupillage, tenancy and staff posts.
Breakthrough Breast Cancer
We’ve designed and built a number of sites for Breakthrough Breast Cancer since 2004, including those for the ground-breaking Generations Study and their Research Centre, but most importantly their primary organisational site; the hub for their campaigning, fundraising and information provision.
In 2009 our redesign of this primary site led the roll-out of a major organisational rebrand and has met with the unanimous approval of internal and external stakeholders alike.
Business in the Community
Leading corporate social responsibility organisation Business in the Community, who work with over 800 of the UK's top companies to improve their impact on society, are a longstanding client who've been with us... well, pretty much from the beginning.
From developing their internal Management Information Systems and complex Activity Reporting Tools to re-launching their public website three times, most recently in December 2008, our work for BITC has encompassed RationalMedia-driven web projects and robust application development.
Central Office of Information
We're pleased to have had an opportunity to contribute to the launch of the UK Government's data site, which draws together a huge number and range of publicly available datasets.
With the design and build of the site nearing completion, Torchbox was commissioned by COI in the weeks leading up to the beta launch to undertake some specific styling updates to help improve the user experience and achieve consistency across the site.
Coeliac UK
Coeliac UK provides expert information for people with coeliac disease, campaigns for improved diagnosis and diet, and researches treatments and the possibility of a cure.
The new website, designed and built by Torchbox on Drupal, plays a central role in Coeliac UK's relationship with its 50,000+ members and features seamless integration with their Integra membership database for joining, renewals and associated payments. We also delivered a complete rebuild of their Electronic Food and Drink Directory of 10,000+ products.
New community features, enhanced management of recipes, venues and services, and interactive tools for the food industry are planned for 2010.
Greenpeace UK
Greenpeace UK commissioned Torchbox in 2008 to undertake ambitious online fundraising, community and integration plans.
As well re-architecting their online donations process, we've leveraged Drupal's Organic Groups to power their 'Get Active' community and Ubercart for the Greenpeace Giving virtual gift store.
More recently we've had the opportunity to contribute ideas and interactive content to Greenpeace's online campaigns, including producing an animated segment for their Airplot fortress design contest.
Joseph Rowntree Foundation
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is a leading social policy research and development charity, working to identify the root causes of social problems and influence policy with demonstrable solutions.
Building on extensive research undertaken by Amberlight, we focused on the needs of JRF's core audience groups of policy makers, practitioners, academics and journalists to maximise usability.
In addition to design and deployment on the open source Drupal CMS and replacing the standard Drupal search with Solr / Lucene, the project also included the migration of a significant amount of content from the old site.
Motor Neurone Disease Association
The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association is the only national organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland dedicated to the support of people with MND and those who care for them.
We've been working with the MND Association since 2005, redeveloping their main organisational website, their annual International Symposium conference microsite and, in 2008, their Dunk-It! fundraising campaign site.
NDCS
Our relationship with NDCS, formerly the National Deaf Children's Society, stretches back to 2002 when we were commissioned to redevelop their main organisational website on RationalMedia and create a support forum for the parents and carers of deaf children, Parent Place.
Since then we've delivered a major redesign of the main NDCS site, the Deaf Child Worldwide site highlighting their international work, and a dedicated challenge events fundraising microsite - NDCS Challenges - promoting the exciting UK and International fundraising activities that NDCS supporters can get involved in.
Personal Finance Education Group
In September 2008 we launched a new RationalMedia-powered website for the Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg), an independent charity helping primary and secondary schools teach personal finance, giving students the skills and knowledge they'll need after leaving school.
Featuring pfeg's vibrant new colour palette and striking photography, the site's primary purpose is to help teachers quickly and easily locate topical resources that will engage and inform their students. Interviews with pfeg regional consultants and card-sorting exercises were among the tools we used to prioritise user requirements and validate the new labelling and information architecture.
POhWER
POhWER is an independent advocacy agency that has experienced tremendous growth in the time that we've been working together.
As well as offering generic advocacy services, POhWER runs the NHS Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS) for the East of England, London and West Midlands regions, and the Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) services in 10 areas across London, East of England, West and East Midlands.
As well as redeveloping the POhWER website on RationalMedia, we also built a case management system, CLEAR, that runs remotely on advocate's laptops so they can update cases while with their clients, and synchs with the main database when they're next online.
Rethink
Rethink is a health charity working to help everybody affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life.
We've been working with Rethink since 2006, redeveloping their main public website and empowering their staff with an organisational Extranet, Inthink, both of which are powered by one instance of RationalMedia.
Slivers of Time
The development and ongoing improvement of the Slivers of Time employment system remains one of Torchbox's most significant technical achievements to date.
Slivers of Time is a revolutionary new way of working and of employing people. It allows the seller (of their time) to say when they want to work and for how much money (and set mark-ups like requiring extra money to travel further to a job).
Slivers of Time is a Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (JavaEE) application built around an Open Source architecture.
St Dunstan's
In September 2008 we launched a new site for St Dunstan's, the charity offering physical and emotional support to blind and visually impaired ex-Services personnel.
Working with an independent project manager brought in by St Dunstan's to deliver the new site, and extrapolating from an incomplete design concept already in place, the site was rapidly deployed on RationalMedia with the client trained and inputting content after less than 5 weeks and the public launch just 3 weeks later.
Stop Climate Chaos
In September 2009 the Stop Climate Chaos coalition approached Torchbox with a brief to build a campaign microsite promoting “The Wave”; the march in London that some 50,000 people attended ahead of the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
Designed and built in just three weeks using open source technologies including Django, Pandastream and Flex and cloud-hosted with Amazon Web Services, the site quickly generated a real buzz, particularly on twitter. Torchbox also created rich media banners for use on coalition member sites and mainstream publisher networks.
The King's Fund
We've been working with The King's Fund since 2004, and in April 2009 launched a major new iteration of their RationalMedia-powered site, including a visually striking design reflecting their new visual identity.
User personalisation of homepage content and layout with interchangeable, draggable content modules uses JavaScript, coded for progressive enhancement to ensure access for all. Users can also save favourite pages and search terms.
User accounts are authenticated against The King's Fund's Integra CRM, which is seamlessly integrated with the website for additional features such as event booking and purchasing publications.
Tommy's
In February 2008 Torchbox was commissioned by the pregnancy charity Tommy's to redesign their main website to tie-in with a major organisational rebrand.
Tommy's funds research into the causes of premature birth, miscarriage and still-birth, works to raise public awareness of the facts relating to these issues, and provides women and medical professionals with the latest free and accurate information.
Working with the communications team at Tommy's we designed the new site to promote and support each aspect of Tommy's work, and handed over Photoshop masters for key templates and a comprehensive web styleguide to the team at Blackbaud for implementation of the site in their NetCommunity system.
University of Chester
Launched in July 2009, the University of Chester site works hard to give prospective applicants a sense of what it will be like to spend 3 or 4 years at this young and thriving university.
Understanding the needs, motivations and attitudes of this key audience group was key to the success of the project. During our discovery phase we undertook a thorough review and evaluation of competitor sites, including listening to the admirably direct and instructive feedback on these of final year A level students. We then sought further input and endorsement of our approach from this audience group during our design process.
The University of Chester site is powered by Drupal, offering a powerful and flexible open source foundation for future development.
University of Oxford
In 2007 Torchbox was commissioned to redevelop the University of Oxford's main public-facing website.
With more than a million visitors every month, the University of Oxford website which, along with the Alumni and Campaign sites, is powered by RationalMedia, appeals to a truly international audience; giving visitors a sense of the University's history and achievements, while positioning the modern University as one of the world's leading centres of learning, teaching and research.
World Conservation Union
Biodiversity Economics is a joint project between the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and WWF promoting economic approaches to conservation by offering environmental economists the opportunity to share documents, contacts and information about upcoming events.
The Biodiversity Economics website is powered by RationalMedia, and also features an implementation of our own open source community search, spidering and indexing engine, FathomFive.
WWF UK
We've been working with WWF UK since 2007, and our work together includes their high profile Footprint Calculator - acclaimed for its simplicity and ease of use - and numerous campaign sites and reporting applications.
In 2009, WWF commissioned Torchbox to completely redesign their key online fundraising site - maximising impact, engagement and task completion, and featuring custom landing pages for DRTV campaigns - for implementation in partnership with a technical ecommerce partner. Also in 2009, we delivered a site promoting a new partnership project between WWF and RSA, focusing on environmental impact reduction and risk management.
